EPISODE 3

1. Something about DOROTHEA and CASAUBON... he's ill, she's trapped?

2. LADISLAW rides into town?

3. LYDGATE and ROSAMUND are engaged. Scene with Bulstrode?

4. FEATHERSTONE is dying. The relatives gather. Get LYDGATE in here? MRS VINCY. FRED, even? ROSAMUND? BORTHROP TRUMBULL. "Auctioneers talk wild." MARY says FEATHERSTONE won't see them.

5. MARY locking up.

6. FEATHERSTONE wakes her in the small hours. He wants her to destroy his last will. "I'll do anything else." "I want nothing else." He throws his stick at her. 353-4. She sees he is dead.

7. Watching the funeral from Lowick. See LYDGATE, ROSAMUND, FROGFACE RIGG, etc. BROOKE has brought the picture over: and the news that LADISLAW is here. Nasty shock for CASAUBON. Mixed feelings for DOROTHEA.

8. Stone Court. Standish reads the will. Both wills. Featherstones and Waules make all the noise. RIGG silently triumphant. FRED silently shattered. MARY GARTH. CALEB GARTH.

9. VINCY house. MAYOR VINCY is in a bad mood. FRED must go back to university and ROSAMUND must wait to marry.

10. MRS BULSTRODE? BULSTRODE and LYDGATE? LYDGATE and FAREBROTHER? LYDGATE wants to hurry the marriage up. (385) Kissy-Kissy, but she wants to meet his posh uncles...

11. ROSAMUND walks with her father to the warehouse.

12. THE pioneer. Articles in it written by Ladislaw. Might even see it coming out.

13. LADISLAW goes to see DOROTHEA. 398-9. he tells her a bit about his family.

14. When CASAUBON hears about The Pioneer, he writes to LADISLAW telling him to give it up or never come to Lowick again. (Ladislaw writes back, refusing.)

15. DOROTHEA asks CASAUBON to give LADISLAW money. He is outraged.

16. (Do it all as scenes, not letters? And end with Casaubon calling in Standish the lawyer.)

17. CHETTAM, CELIA, CADWALLADERS. BROOKE is standing for parliament as a Whig. Ladislaw, Bulstrode, in his party. They get at BROOKE.

18. CHETTAM gets DOROTHEA to visit her uncle. Meets Ladislaw (426-7).

19. Dagley and the hare incident.

20. FAREBROTHER goes to the GARTHS as an emissary for FRED. (439) But CALEB is in luck. Now going to be agent for Tipton and Freshitt. He proposes to take FRED in as apprentice. FAREBROTHER years for MARY. And CALEB has been asked to value STONE COURT.

21. At Stone Court, RIGG is visited by RAFFLES. 450-451. And by chance picks up the letter, signed Nicholas Bulstrode. Opens it later in the stage coach.

22. LYDGATE visits CASAUBON. Yew tree walk. Rooks etc. (459) He tells CASAUBON he may die soon.

23. CASAUBON rejects DOROTHEA. Then they go to bed together. A partial reconciliation.

24. DOROTHEA goes to visit LYDGATE. He is married by now, and LADISLAW is there, visiting ROSAMOND. LADISLAW-ROSMUND.

25. LYDGATE and DOROTHEA at the New Hospital. DOROTHEA says she'll contribute two hundred a year.

26. Do we need another Board Meeting at the New Fever Hospital, with the other medical men refusing to work there? (see 492-3)

27. LYDGATE and ROSAMOND. 497. Vesalius.

28. LYDGATE and LADISLAW arguing. (omit?)

29. Ladislaw goes to Lowick Church. (omit?)

30. CASAUBON and DOROOTHEA. He's making her promise to carry out his wishes after his death. She won't say yes.

31. She goes to him next day, and he's dead.

Annotation 1: Above the first line of text on the first page, there is a handwritten note, reading 'First thoughts towards 1st draft of Ep 3 ... to Snodin for comments, but by then the storm had erupted!'

Annotation 2: In red ink, on the first page, the words 'The wedding?' are written above number 12, as well as above number 20 on the second page.
