Annotation 1: At the very top of the page, in all capital letters, the handwritten word "SORRY" is written. Beneath it, across the width of the page, beneath the type-written page number "- 3/48 -", is the handwritten note: "The 'Abominable' line can't be cut. But if it could be done in a way that brought them together rather than draws them apart?" An arrow points from the word "The" that began the note, around it, and cuts through the other handwritten notes on the left-hand side of the page, into the shape ellipse around Annotation 5.

Annotation 2: A circle drawn around Ladislaw's type-written speech beginning "Certainly not..." to "feeling".

Annotation 3: In the blank space on the left-hand side of the page there is a handwritten note: "It would be wise if Ladislaw tells this as a bit of a funny story - against himself as well as Casaubon. The young sprig who made the mistake of thinking his opinions + criticisms would be welcomed - faults on both sides!". This note begins parallel to Ladislaw's type-written speech beginning "Did... while?" and ends parallel to the beginning of Dorothea's type-written speech beginning "[who wants" to "them both]". The words 'against' 'sprig' and 'rapport' are all partially obscured by the ring binding.

Annotation 4: Beneath Annotation 3, there is a handwritten note that stretches the width of the page, in the break between Dorothea's typewritten speech beginning "And yet... concerned", and the start of Ladislaw's speech beginning "yes... disinherited". The note reads: "This gives a chance of rapport between L+D. They can smile at each other." With a small arrow from the words "L+D" to the left-hand side of the aforementioned Ladislaw's speech.

Annotation 5: An ellipse is hand-drawn around the second sentence within Ladislaw's type-written speech beginning "it was... disinherited." Within this ellipse , a handwritten note to the left-hand side of the speech: "Cut this? Should we see him being generous and smiley?" The arrow from Annotation 1 also finishes here.

Annotation 6: To the left of Dorothea's type-written speech beginning "I wonder... about her?", there is a handwritten note: "(intimate)".

Annotation 7: To the left of Ladislaw's type written speech beginning "she married... both sides.", there is a handwritten note: "Subtext: "We're a romantic, passionate lot in our family. So are you, deep down. I'd love you like this if you gave me the chance."" The word 'are' is partially obscured by the ring binding.
